The Blink of an Eye

It is said that the eyes are the window to the soul. The image of the human eye represents the micro of an individual's vision and the macro of an all-seeing eye, of the future and past, floating in time and space, watching over life. I'm attracted to the image of an eye because it resonates on so many different levels.

Pink and blue depicts the traditional binary representation of gender. In my images, the two colors are joined, the single moment of conception, viewed just prior sexual delineation. Will it be a boy or a girl? That moment of one cell splicing away from the other. But is it ever a totally clean cut? Or do we all retain a sliver of the opposite? And perhaps more than a sliver. This mixture of male and female, however slight, stays with us for life. This alchemy creates the beauty, tension, and magic that make us human.

These works on paper invite you on a journey of discovery, under a microscope, where the clock has hesitated for a split second, the blink of an eye.

Peter A Davis: I am an artist and organizer living in SMA for ten years. In a previous life I was an Art Director at Random House/Harmony Books and Creative director for Phoenix Color, printers for the American publishing trade. I traveled the world as a freelance Photographer for FPG/Getty Images. I taught hand building at Greenwich House Pottery, the 63rd St. Y and the JCC, all in NYC. I also produced a bi-monthly platemaking workshop PLATE IT at Ceramic Supply in Lodi, NJ for students and teachers. I organized the Clay Festival in NYC for 10 years prior to moving to SMA. Recently I was the organizer of MyStudio here in Colonia San Antonio, created the Banner project and San Antonio Murals. I had the honor of being part of the Ceramic Biennale for two years at the Cecut Museum in Tijuana and last summer one of my drawings was part of the London Biennale.

Now I spend most of my time at home working on medium size drawings utilizing colored pencil, waterproof ink, acrylic paint and glitter nail polish. A selection of these drawings may currently be seen at the Institute Allende until August 25th. Please try to stop by to see them, they will take you to another level.
