Francisco Toledo is a Mexican artist who in 2002 confronted McDonald's and prevented them from setting up a branch in the city of Oaxaca. Toledo wrote a letter to the chain's executives claiming that opening a branch would cause damage to Oaxaca's economy and cultural heritage.

The letter said the following:

"The time spent on preparing the traditional Oaxaca food, and the time we take to taste it, part of our intangible cultural heritage, means a daily experience of diversity and nutritional refinement that elevates our quality of life."

To gather signatures he organized a tamaliza (an activity to prepare and eat tamales) in which he distributed sweet, mole, rajas, chepil and beans, women of Tlacolula gave tejate, an ancestral drink that contains corn, cocoa and cinnamon, all to the beat of 3 Oaxacan bands.

He collected more than 10,000 signatures not to authorize the installation of the branch and beat the franchise.

Holy Toledo!
