If the mere mention of wine and cheese conjures a party in your mouth, you're in luck! For the rest of this month, you can sip and savor the best of both at Feria Nacional del Queso y el Vino 2024 (National Cheese and Wine Fair) in Tequisquiapan, Queretaro.
Over the next three consecutive weekends, May 10 to 26, thousands of wine and cheese lovers throughout Mexico will pilgrimage to this 44th annual festival in Tequisquiapan—a charming Pueblo Magico that's also the epicenter of Queretaro's Art, Cheese and Wine Route.
For a 300-peso daily fee, everyone's invited to come indulge in local, national, and international wines, famous Queretaro cheeses, and a full schedule of cultural, artistic, and musical extras.
For vino and queso fans, this all sounds delicious, right? But is it worth the four-hour roundtrip drive from San Miguel?
"Yes!" says SMA resident Tonya Harmon, the official Empress of Cheese. "This festival is a fantastic opportunity to taste and learn about wine and award-winning cheeses that you wouldn't have the chance to taste otherwise, because many are not sold in San Miguel.
"It's a rare opportunity to meet so many cheese makers and wine producers at one locale," she adds. "And they're all happy to answer your questions and have you sample their products."
If you attend the event, plan to enjoy a Mexican-focused venue where love for wine and cheese is the universal language (English may be sparse).
Querétaro wineries will be showcasing their hearty reds (Merlot, Syrah, Malbec, Marselan, Tempranillo, and Cabernet) and refreshing whites (Macabeo, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, and Xarel-lo). But wine tasters also have the chance to sample vino from many Mexico wine regions, including the featured state, Aguascalientes. Plus, this year's visiting guest county Germany will offer sausage, Brezels (pretzels), and wines to indulge in, too. On the cheese front, Queretaro goat-cheese makers will circulate their revered bites among other renowned cheeses from the region (learn more about Queretaro cheeses here).
