A combustible combination of artists, from the formidable vanguard of the new, emerging Guadalajara art scene arrive here in San Miguel. Together, artists Patricia García, Carlos Laracilla, Joaquín Urrutia and Jesús Villalpando (Feng Chuy) create a diverse, inspiring exhibit without limits.

Patricia García

Patricia García offers her intriguing surrealist juxtapositions, technical excellence and resonant symbology in transcendental works that inspire both sensation and contemplation. They beg to be seen again and again.

Carlos Laracilla

*

Carlos Laracilla subjects, women and animals, become the muse to communicate his passion to the world. Laracilla’s work has been shown in over 120 exhibitions throughout Mexico, the United State, Europe and United Emirates.

Jesús Villalpando

*

The riotously colorful works of Jesús Villalpando (Feng Chuy) in part derive from the thrill-seeking expressive art form known as graffiti, from the Italian graffito “scratch”. Spontaneous expression of what he feels at the moment, Feng’s work is rebelliously vibrant.

Joaquín Urrutia

*

Joaquín Urrutia's work is autobiographical, most often expressing the ongoing angst and emotions of wanting to lead a “normal” existence. As a very young boy, he received an infusion of contaminated blood which rendered him profoundly deaf. Joaquín received his bachelor of arts degree at the University of Guadalajara and his master's degree at the International Center of Photography & Cinema in Madrid.

These last days of preparation for the opening of Guadalajara, Guadalajara remind me of my early years in the New York theater. There seems no end to the list of things that still need to be completed. Yet somehow, not unlike a Broadway show, they invariably all get done, sometimes just seconds before the curtain goes up. I recall Theoni Aldredge, Oscar-winner for Best Costume Design for The Great Gatsby, sewing on a last sequin as the overture played just moments before the curtain went up.

It's that attention to detail I comb over and over as the May 18th opening approaches. Even with each work of art hung, it is often only a temporary placement. It's not unusual to move a piece four or five times before it finds the exact right spot. And that also means a lot of patching and painting. There's the lighting, the writing of copy (which I abhor), the interaction with the artists, not unlike actors, and on and on. As each detail gets finalized it all culminates in an "opening", again not unlike putting on a theater production. I don't fret. All will get done. And if it doesn't, life won't change. I'll still be living in Shangri La, more commonly known as San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
