Gaden Shartse Monastic University
Gaden was originally founded in Tibet by Lama Tsongkhapa (1357-1419), a great master dharma reformer and Tibetan Buddhist scholar.
In the year 1409, Lama Tsongkhapa established the Gaden Monastery, and from its founding, the Gelugpa School of Tibetan Buddhism, also known as the Yellow Hat Section, was developed.
Gaden Monastery was one of the Den-sa-sum, the three most famous monasteries in Tibet. There are two colleges within the Gaden Monastery, the Shartse to the east and the Jangtse to the west. Gaden Monastery had a population of more than 3,300 monks during the early 20th century. Later, in the 1950s, the monastery's population grew to 5,000 monks. Gaden quickly became famous for their moral discipline and their academic and spiritual values. Regardless of specialized studies, all the monks studied religious music, art, sculpture, administrative work, etc., in both the Shartse and Jangtse colleges, Sutra and Buddhist Tantra are taught and practiced in a combined program.
In 1950 the Chinese People's Liberation Army invaded and occupied Tibet. In 1959 His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama was forced to flee to India for his safety and that of the Tibetans.
In 1970 the Gaden Monastery reincarnated when Gaden Shartse Monastery was established by 85 refugee monks near the remote village of Mundgod, in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. Today the Gaden Monastery has more than 1,400 Tibetan scholars, writers, students, and administrators who are organized by Khangtsen, which are like small monasteries within the great monastery that is Gaden.
For 31 years, the Pneuma Institute and its director Juan Ruiz Naupari have had the privilege of carrying out the World Tour for Inner Peace with the Tibetan monks of the Gaden Shartse Monastic University in India.
This tour is part of a Pneuma Institute Solidarity program called Maitreya Buddha; a program focused on the reconstruction and improvement of the Gaden Shartse monastery as well as the education of its monks since 1992.
In 2004, the Pneuma Institute and its director organized His Holiness the Dalai Lama's visit to Puerto Rico, and in 2011 they sponsored the Maitreya Buddha Empowerment given by His Holiness for the first time in India.
In 2019, together with the Gaden Shartse Monastery, they coordinated the commemoration of the sixth centenary of the ascension to Nirvana of the Great Lama Tsongkhapa, creator of the Gelugpa lineage, celebrated in India with the support of His Holiness. Once again, at the request of the Gaden Shartse Monastery and with the blessing of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, we are very happy to announce the Inner Peace Tour for the years 2024-2025.
The Pneuma Institute is a non-profit organization with a presence in Latin America, the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and the East. Its commitment is to work for the awakening of the essential values of the human being, and to promote Inner Peace as an essential element to promote Global Peace.
