by Pascual Hijuelos

I always prepare a study before I start a painting. But, inevitably, the painting is never the same as the study. When I start a painting, the process takes on a life of its own. The painting process is organic as well as spiritual. There are changes in color, texture and shapes. Ultimately it may become a completely different painting from when I started.

I am for the most part a Hard Edge painter. My images are clearly defined and crisp. Some artists of the same ilk prefer to have an immaculate surface void of any mistakes or ghostly images. I, on the other hand, embrace these. I love using transparencies and leaving traces of the painting's evolution. For me they are a reminder that the painting has a history and an energy that goes beyond the surface.

José Pascual Hijuelos, a Cuban-American, was born and raised on the Upper West Side of New York City. After serving four years of military service in England, he returned home and went on to complete an MFA in Painting. He studied with Philip Pearlstein, Lucas Samaras, Jimmy Ernst, Lee Bontecou and Alan D’Arcangelo, and was the assistant to Al Held for several years.

An abstract painter, Mr. Hijuelos was nurtured on Postwar American Abstract Painting, influenced by such notables as Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Ben Nicholson and Al Held.

Mr. Hijuelos has traveled extensively. For many years, he worked as an archaeological site supervisor and illustrator in Bulgaria, Greece and Cyprus. He now divides his time between San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and New York.
