In her new body of work, Hagar Fletcher turns once more toward the light. While still suffering from fear and anger at the horror of October 7, 2023, her pain shares space with color, curiosity, and imagination.
This is Hagar's second exhibition at the Museo de la Ciudad de Querétaro. Originally from Jerusalem and now based in San Miguel, her work blends textile, sculpture, and story into vivid, emotionally resonant forms.
Her fantastical figures, stitched from plaster, wood, steel wool, old clothes, and all kinds of found objects, become companions in a journey toward healing.
"I can spend days and nights in my studio," she says, "forgetting everything but the material in my hands. Something new is coming to life, and it is mine."
But her journey includes the viewer. Indeed, ultimately it is for the viewer as much as for herself.
"I try to bring a smile, a feeling of gentle warmth to the viewer, and to do this first I must make myself smile. This is what I seek in my art: a smile, a sense of whimsy, of wonder."
Hagar's work can be seen in museums in Israel and private collections in Europe and America. Her "I'm in Heaven" installation was the lead exhibit in the Israel pavilion at the Venice Biennale, and has featured in galleries in Milan, Tel Aviv and New York.
