I recently took a dance vacation in Cuba. I spent seven days in old Havana, dancing for most of the day, and wandering the streets in my spare time. I was fascinated by the rich layers of history, culture, and resilience I found all around me.
Cuba's unique blend of old-world charm and lively personal connections captivated me. I found myself photographing the streets of old Havana in a way I had not practiced for many years: exploring public spaces and looking into private ones. In so doing I made images of markings and passings of the people occupying those spaces I examined.
For this exhibition I decided to show these straight photographs -- straight in the sense that they are not manipulated or digitally collaged in my usual style. In this work I seek to illuminate the layered intricacies of Cuba and its inhabitants, including the beauty, hardships, directness and resilience of its thriving people and culture.
Through this collection, I invite viewers to experience the richness and complexities of Cuban life. I hope that these images inspire dialogue and reflection about the human experience as found in Havana today.
