by Kathleen Cammarata

Art's meaning begins and ends with the experience of the work itself.

The artist takes wet colorful substances, smears it on a piece of fabric drawn taut across wooden bars and calls it painting. This aspect of human making, taking raw material and charging it with presence, is of critical importance. Drawing and painting is the possibility of becoming present. It is transformative.

My paintings have an overarching story of contemporary landscape. Our planet, composed of earth, air, and water, is in flux. We know that stars are born and die. We know about black holes and dark matter. We have ventured beyond the historical depiction of sky and ground. My work examines the place and terrain of this frontier of the 21st century. In the crisis of environmental issues I intend to sensitize the viewer to these concerns. I want the viewer to look at the painting, be in the painting, and come out the other side with a new perspective.

The Eloquent Spin
*

In the painting "The Eloquent Spin" we see a small golden planet floating in deep space. Bearing down from above is a white moon-like planet sharing light with a distant mountain. And rolling down the hill is the ball with its eloquent spin. Will it arrive in some unknown place? Can we imagine an incident like this?

In "Passage" the earth, sky, and water elements intermingle in a swirl of energy. Planets are emerging and receding. And one planet is passing through. Where is it going? Where are we going? What is in the near and distant future?

This is about us.
