Pascual Hijuelos
"Que Será"
(What Will be)
With his abstract, spatial use of color and form, Pascual Hijuelos experiments with the interaction of color affecting contrasts and light. He systematically dissects the relationship between form and color and changes the relationship through a soft layering of color. From the very hard edge paintings, the work takes on more of a color driven abstraction, with softly fading hues escaping from the hard edge forms. Asymmetric forms dance across the picture planes, with the ever present image of the circle in many of the works. The artist's bold form and color works now approach color through subtlety and transparency, softening and juxtaposing the hard edge style of the original work, creating a magical duo in an almost figurative dance.
Hijuelos thinks of himself almost exclusively as a painter, but cannot deny the "muscle" and lyricism in his very sculptural bas-reliefs. The layered forms add more depth to the already visually layered picture plane. And like all true sculpture, tease the viewer into wanting to touch.
Born in New York City of Cuban parents, Hijuelos was the youngest of the post-war generation of abstract artists. He studied under several artists of that period and was an assistant to Al Held for several years before breaking out on his own. His work can be found in several museums in the States and Mexico with his most recent museum exhibition in the Felgueres Museum of Abstract Art in Zacateros and his work is widely collected in the United States, Monterrey and Mexico City.
The artist lives and works between New York City and San Miguel de Allende.
Catalogs of his work can be found in the Intersección Gallery.

Rocío Sáenz
"Un jardin politacamente incorrecto"
(A Politically Incorrect Garden
Rocío Sáenz experiments with the interaction of color, line and the spatial effects of contrasts and light. She systematically dissects the relationship between form and color and changes the appearance through the layering of color and often moves her personal language to the edges of pure abstraction. The very fluid-like entities shift in and out of figuration heightening their expressive power. Human and animal forms peek out from iridescent surfaces, void of any natural object that would ground them in the scale of a landscape or still life. Stripped of neutral tones, the very organic imagery reflects mineral pigments that constantly change depending on space and position of the viewer. The work becomes a dramatic shift of color and form, or, can be formless with a constantly shifting color. The expressive anthropomorphized forms are born from the human spirit and act out grand emotions, drawing inspiration from biomorphic abstractions, surrealism and transcendentalism. The work appears to be in motion, the resins of color forever moving, conveying the action and energy of their creator.
Rocío Sáenz was born in Chihuahua but lives and works in Guadalajara. Very well traveled, the artist has been the recipient of multiple scholarships, fellowships and awards with work to be found in various private and public collections. The Intersección Gallery is delighted to present the work of this outstanding artist during this anniversary exhibition season.

Victor Hugo Perez
"Donde habitan los instintos"
(Where the Instincts Reside)
Victor Hugo Perez once again charms us with an especially selected group of whimsical masterpieces. The artist's most recent museum exhibition has the theme of homage to past masters; this exhibition in the Intersección Gallery brings us a careful selection of works with similar roots. The arte-brut of Picasso's abstract women and the romantic picnic scenes reminiscent of Renoir and Manet form an echo of times gone by in Victor Hugo's most recent work. The superb use of color with the impressionist brush strokes are an integral part of this artist's oeuvre. His favorite subjects: women, animals and flower arrangements are forever present. His multifaceted talent offers to the public and discerning collectors a wide range of sculptures, all in the animal world. Magnificently detailed in bronze, a few examples can be seen in the gallery.
Born in Guadalajara where he still lives and works, Victor Hugo is a proficient printer creating "tongue in cheek" etchings and lithographs. And is, as well as a master ceramist creating beautiful vessels on which he paints his favorite subjects. Widely collected here in Mexico, and Latin America, his work can be found in major regional museums as well as in important public collections.
Several catalogs have been printed on his work and can be consulted and purchased at the Intersección Gallery.
