Condado de Haza

Today I am featuring an outstanding red wine selection which I purchased at Cava Suatto in Centro for the price of $539 pesos, the Condado de Haza Crianza, 2019.

Condado de Haza is one of the top estates of Alejandro Fernández, a legendary winemaker in Ribera del Duero, Spain, who also founded the iconic Pesquera.

The winery is currently listing the 2021 vintage for sale, so finding this 2019 vintage locally is an added bonus. This wine is 100% Tempranillo and has the Spanish Classification of "Crianza."

Crianza has a definition meaning the wine has aged a minimum of 12 months in oak with an additional 12 month aging in the bottle before being released. This wine was aged for 15 months in American Oak before bottling. The use of American Oak is very typical in Spanish wines.

Wine Enthusiast rated this wine 93 points with the note:

Dark garnet in color, this wine has aromas of blackberry, raspberry and chocolate covered espresso bean. It is smooth on the palate, with polished tannins and berry flavors joined by notes of milk chocolate, cocoa powder, anisette and violet that wend their way to a floral and fruit finish.

Personally, I find the wine to be deliciously bold and well-balanced with dark black fruit and hints of dusty cocoa. The tannins are well integrated and smooth. I could drink this wine and enjoy it on its own, but also find it pairs well with grilled meats or red sauces.

I think it drinks well above its price point; one of those wines that is just a pleasure to swirl and sniff before sipping.

Dave Butner had a 40+ year career in IT as a software engineer. Winemaking was a hobby that turned into a second job, opening a winery with a tasting room. He contracted with vineyards to purchase grapes for his wines, ran the winery for eight years, doing it all by himself, a one man operation, selling it in 2016 and then did winemaking consulting for start up winery for some years afterwards.

It was always a small operation. He made 1,000 cases a year at most, doing it all while keeping his day job. Had a ton of fun and was successful in the sense of being written about in wine publications and such, pouring at wine events and competitions. Wine has been a big love of his for 40 years. He has traveled and tasted all over the major wine regions in the US.
