"I feel there is something unexplored about woman that only a woman can explore."
Georgia O'Keefe

Drawing and painting takes us beyond the realms of what we see everyday and is limited only by the imagination. Artists, Shahastra Levy and Kathleen Cammarata, invite us to imagine the garden as a metaphor for woman.

Levy is a multifaceted artist drawn to the transformational soul qualities of art making. She works to transfer that essence into images that inspire and provoke. Using colored pencils, collage and white ink on black paper her mixed media drawings are deeply personal portrayals of her outer and inner journey. In the drawing "I Can't Know Why" we can see a subtle puzzled expression on the woman's face. A bouquet of flowers in her hand transform into tiny butterflies escaping into the night sky. Two paths lead into the unknown distance beckoning us beyond.

Cammarata, similarly, takes us on an unmapped journey. In the mixed media piece "Night Migrations" a woman wearing flowers in her hair, is gazing out into the unknown. She is an integral part of the cosmos which can be seen through her translucent body and is transversed by migrating butterflies. It is the butterflies and the flowers that reveal the connection between these two artists' work.

Levy authored and illustrated the "Magical Rainbow" series of children's books based on color and positive heroes, now considered 1980's classics. Her award winning pastels and acrylic landscapes and her imaginary "innerscapes" can be found in private and corporate collections. Her evocative figurative soul studies have been published into a 50 card reflection deck called "Meeting the Self."
